Overview

What this area handles

Direct tax work runs on an annual cycle with decisions spread across it. We compute advance tax and review withholding under Chapter XVII-B. Quarterly TDS statements are filed so that vendors and employees see a clean Form 26AS. Return preparation follows the audit, with the computation reconciled to the books and to Form 3CD where a tax audit applies. Positions that need reasoning are documented when taken. That includes the choice between the regimes under Sections 115BAA and 115BAB, deduction claims, and expenditure that straddles capital and revenue. It also includes loss carry-forward after a change in shareholding under Section 79. Assessment work covers responses to notices under Sections 143(1), 143(2), 148, and 133(6), plus faceless assessment submissions and rectification. Appeals run before the Commissioner (Appeals) and the Income Tax Appellate Tribunal. For individuals and promoters, work includes capital gains computation and house property and business income. The disclosure schedules attract scrutiny: foreign assets, unlisted shares, and specified financial transactions. Where a past filing is wrong, we assess whether an updated return under Section 139(8A) is available before the department raises the point.
